Keeping yourself safe when online dating

Keeping yourself safe when online dating

Recently, many single people have turned to online dating for the very first time. Being forced to stay at home has made us look for new and alternative ways to connect, and online dating provides just that. But some people do have their worries about how safe online dating is. I think this is particularly true for single parents who often worry a little bit more than most about how their actions might impact their families. For that reason, I’ve put together a few tips on how to keep yourself safe when online dating.

Don’t give out too much personal information

One of the most important things when you first start talking to anybody is that you don’t give out too much personal information straight away. You need to be a little cautious about how much you share about yourself and your life. Once you get to know each other better, you can start to share a little more details about yourself and your family. Just be a little cautious, especially in the very early days.

Try to date locally

It’s important that you are able to meet up safely once Coronavirus restrictions are lifted. If you can stick to chatting to people who live in your local area, then it will be far easier and far safer for you to meet up when you’re allowed.

Back when dating sites first became a “thing”, it was likely that you’d be chatting to people who lived hundreds or even thousands of miles away. These days, however, there are plenty of local online dating sites such as Lancashire singles where you can head to meet somebody for a date in Lancashire.

Arrange some video dates

At the moment, all we can hope for is a video or virtual date. But, once lockdowns and coronavirus restrictions become a thing of the past, it’s still a good idea to arrange a few video dates to begin with. This gives you a good idea as to whether you’re compatible before you head out to meet in person. If you feel at all uncomfortable on any of these video dates, you’re free to end things there without worrying about going out on an actual date.

Do some research

I’m not telling you to turn into a stalker, but it is important that you know who you’re talking to. You might want to leave this until you’ve had a few video conversations and you’ve shared a little bit more information about yourselves with each other. Once you know a little bit more about who you’re chatting with, you can start to do a little bit of research into them. This might just be spending a little bit of time checking out their social media or doing a quick google search to see what shows up about them. It’s just a little bit of extra security before you dive into a dating relationship with them.

Online dating is certainly growing in popularity, and with just a few careful precautions, it doesn’t need to be difficult to keep yourself safe when online dating.
