One of the big things to think about when you’re planning to have kids is how you’re going to afford them. Children are expensive! But is there ever a right time financially to have kids? The simple answer to this is nope!
Having children is something that many of us plan to do, but finances can be a big stumbling block. Should you have a huge lump of savings before you even think about children? Do you need to own your own home? Do you need to be debt-free? These are the questions that cause so many of us sleepless nights.
Of course, in an ideal world we’d all be debt-free homeowners with a whole chunk of savings before we even thought about having kids. But the reality is that life simply isn’t like that. It’s great to have an ideal situation in your mind that you can work towards, but not having these things shouldn’t stop you from having children.
In hindsight, I would have liked to be in a better financial position before we had our children. BUT we managed and our children never suffered. They’ve always had food on the table, a roof over their heads and even the odd holiday thrown in.
It’s definitely a good idea to get yourself in a stable financial position before you start trying for a family, but this doesn’t have to mean that you have thousands of pounds stashed away. Make sure you know your incomings and outgoings and that you’re not relying on credit every month.
Other than that, kids do cost money, but you don’t actually need to spend a fortune in order to keep them happy, healthy and safe.
