Dating tips if you're single and disabled

For the healthy and able bodied amongst us, planning a date night probably isn’t too difficult. You might spend a little time thinking about what type of date you want to go on and where you want to go, but the chances are that there aren’t too many obstacles standing in the way. However, if you live with a disability and you’re dating, it can be a little more difficult, particularly when you’re meeting somebody new.

Meeting somebody new

If you’ve been out of the dating scene for a while, then starting to date again can be incredibly daunting, but it can be even more difficult if you’re living with a disability. There are a few things you can do to make things a little easier though.

Be honest right from the start

Honestly is always the best policy in my experience, particularly when it comes to dating new people. There’s no point in pretending to be somebody you’re not, it will only make things trickier further down the line.

If you’re living with any kind of disability, then being honest and open right from the beginning can only help to give your budding relationship the best chance.

Be honest

Be realistic about date nights

Whether you’ve got a hidden disability that isn’t obvious to somebody looking in, or you’re in a wheelchair, the chances are that you will need to think a little more carefully about date nights than your fully abled date. You might need to think about accessibility to the venue, or take a close look at the menu to make sure a restaurant caters for your needs. This doesn’t need to be a hindrance, but it is important. You want to feel as comfortable as possible in your surroundings without having to worry about whether you can get to the toilet easily or not!

Think about using specialist dating sites

A great way to meet people who understand your situation is to set yourself up on a dedicated dating site. You could try one geared up specifically for single disabled dating, meaning that everybody else on there will also be experiencing some of the same concerns as you are. This can be a great way to start dating, especially if you’re feeling a little nervous.

You can find all kinds of dating sites online, so there is bound to be one that suits what you’re looking for. For example, if you’re a little older, disabled and looking to date, then there are sites dedicated to dating for disabled seniors.

Remember that you’re not alone

Even though it might feel like it sometimes, it’s important to remember that no matter what you’re going through, somebody else will have been through it too. YouTube is a great resource when you’re feeling a little isolated, as you can watch how other people deal with their situations and that in turn can help you to deal with what you’re going through too. If you have any concerns about dating with a disability, then it’s always good to see that others have been through the same thing and come out the other side.
